It doesn’t sound like Southern Mississippi’s baseball team will have to make the College World Series. Brett Favre is playing in 2010, either way.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the future Hall of Fame quarterback underwent ankle surgery Friday morning in Florida. The surgery, deemed necessary for Favre to play a second year for the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, involves a recovery timetable that leaves Favre ready to attend training camp, if he chooses.

Bill RomanowskiHere’s what is happening around the National Football League on Friday, May 21, 2010:

o. File this one under the pot calling the kettle black:

Former linebacker and admitted steroid user Bill Romanowski went on SIRIUS radio Friday and ripped Texans LB Brian Cushing for tiptoeing around his positive hCG test, nationalfootballpost.com reported.

“Now, as far as Brian Cushing, here’s the deal: The only way you can get that substance that he took, hCG, in your body is to inject it, okay?” Romanowski (pictured right) said. “So let’s get that clear. So his sob story on TV was, I’m just going to say, was a total lie, okay? … Do you think when he was getting injected in his ass that he didn’t know what was going on? Well, bullcrap. Let’s get real. Be honest about it, Brian.”

Romo seems to be making the rounds. Earlier in the week, he praised Canadian doctor Anthony Galea — the man charged with providing HGH and other drugs to NFL players — as “a pioneer … the best of the best of the best,” when it comes to helping athletes recover from injury.

Marc BulgerArguably the biggest reason that the San Francisco 49ers‘ bandwagon is filling up in the NFC West is the retirement of former Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner. With Warner out of the picture, the Cardinals‘ offensive situation looks much less promising — Warner’s backup Matt Leinart finds himself locked in a battle with offseason addition Derek Anderson.

But the Cardinals may still be in the market for another QB. According to Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole, who cited an Arizona team source, the Cards’ coaching staff has been underwhelmed by both Leinart and Anderson, and the team may soon make a push to sign free-agent quarterback Marc Bulger.

Bulger was cut in April by St. Louis, the team with which he’d played his entire nine-year career. His final year with the Rams, though, was a mess — he missed seven games due to injury as St. Louis bumbled its way to an NFL-worst 1-15 record and the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft. The Rams selected Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford there, immediately anointing him as their QB of the future.

Zach ThomasIt’s July of 1996 and Jimmy Johnson is running his first official training camp as the Miami Dolphins‘ coach. The standout — the guy Jimmy can’t stop talking about — is a rookie fifth-round draft pick named Zach Thomas, a linebacker from Texas Tech.

“He does everything. He senses everything. He’s just good,” Johnson said. “Not just for a rookie. For anyone.”

That was Thomas’ career. Over 14 seasons, the first 12 of them with the Dolphins and the last with the Cowboys (plus one preseason in Kansas City), Thomas just kept making plays. He started 182 of 184 games, made more than 1,700 tackles and was voted to seven Pro Bowls. So, as is the case these days, when he retired Thursday, the first question that comes up was, “Should he be in the Hall of Fame?”

As a voter, my answer is probably not.

Santonio HolmesFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes believes a flight attendant singled him out last month because he was a former Pittsburgh Steelers player.

“I just felt I was being scrutinized just for who I am,” said Holmes, speaking publicly Thursday for the first time about the incident.

Authorities at Pittsburgh International Airport filed a report after an unidentified flight attendant claimed Holmes failed to follow regulations by not turning off his iPod as the plane was landing. Police questioned him at the gate, but he was not arrested or charged.

Holmes was acquired from Pittsburgh in April for a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft. He was on a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Pittsburgh, and thinks the flight attendant targeted him because of his Steelers ties.

“I honestly think it was,” Holmes said. “Flying back to Pittsburgh for the first time since being here in New Jersey. She definitely just tried to make a name for herself because she actually was the one who went to the media and reported it. Nobody else did.”
